In direct thermal printing, similar to thermal transfer printing, the heat of the print head is activated and with it the ink particles on the label material. This means that the label material itself reacts to the localized heat. As the labels with the thermo-intensive material pass the heated print head, a kind of color change occurs. This process is only possible due to the heat-sensitive coating on the label, in which a chemical color reaction is caused by the heated print head.

As with thermal transfer printing, with direct thermal printing the heating elements in the print head of the label printer are heated. The label roll with the thermosensitive labels runs past the heating elements in the print head and a kind of color change occurs on the paper. This is due to the special label material, as the direct thermal labels have a heat-sensitive coating.
